Weekend in Oakville

Every weekend, I visit my grandparents and cousins in Oakville. Though I live not too far away from Oakville, I really enjoy spending my weekends there, as if I went on a vacation out of town. There are so many interesting places to visit in Oakville, so aside from visiting my relatives, I come back to explore more of this amazing place.

Here is a list of my favorite activities we did on my weekends at Oakville:

  1. Visiting Old Oakville

Known as Oakville’s oldest neighborhood, Old Oakville lives up to its name and reputation. This area in Oakville has a unique charm in it, giving a quaint and sophisticated vibe. It can be seen on the historic buildings and old but classy houses. There are also specialty shops and great bars where we stopped by. As we went around, I saw a large shopping mall in the area called Oakville Place, as well as outdoor parks, galleries, and scenic lakefronts. We also went cycling around Oakville Harbor, where I saw nearby restaurants like the Colossus Greek Taverna, Coriander Green, and Ristorante Julia. Old Oakville is situated at the shores of Lake Ontario, and is also called Downtown Oakville.

  • Learning Art at Museums

On some weekends, my grandmother wanted to show us magnificent art at galleries she used to visit. We went to Erchless Estate, her favorite community museum and is also known as Oakville Museum. It was originally the home of the Chisholm family, the founding family of Oakville.  The 1.6-hectare estate is made up of several structures and connected brick buildings, which are protected and preserved by the government. Inside the Erchless Estate, we saw several collections of textiles, artifacts, costumes, and decorative arts. Those are permanent collections owned by the Chisholm family, while other special exhibitions displayed at the museum are from various Canadian artists. If you love art as much as we do, I recommend a visit at Erchless Estate. It is located at 8 Navy Street, Oakville, Ontario.

  • Learning and Playing Golf

My cousins love playing golf, so one weekend they brought me to the famous Glen Abbey Golf Club. This place has hosted 30 Canadian Open Championships, and even Tiger Woods won championships here. The golf course is incredible and well-maintained. Even the staffs are all helpful and friendly. I didn’t know how to play golf well, but good thing they offer courses for those who wish to learn. You can visit the Glen Abbey Golf Club at 1333 Dorval Drive, Oakville, Ontario.

In addition, I also learned a lot about history of golf and people who contributed to the game at the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. It is a museum and hall of fame that aims to celebrate and commemorate significant accomplishments related to golf. The Canadian Golf Hall of Fame is located at the Glen Abbey Golf Club too.

  • Picnic at the Park

Most of the weekends, either we stay home or have picnics at the park. Though we have visited a few parks within Oakville already, the one worth-mentioning is the Bronte Creek Provincial Park. I really enjoyed my visit as it is a great place for biking, hiking, and skiing. It also has a huge outdoor pool and a farm house with live animals. The camp site is available for overnight use, but you’ll have to pay a separate fee for that. The walk-in and parking fees are reasonable too. The Bronte Creek Provincial Park is situated at 1219 Burloak Drive, Oakville, Ontario.
